Philosophy of Education
What is a philosophy of education?
What is a philosophy of education?
Philosophy of education is something that influences what and how
students are taught in school. It focuses on the values, beliefs and
attitudes that a student should learn in their growing process. All
these determine the direction of our education especially its aims,
goals, objectives, content delivery and education assessment. It
represents answers to our questions on the purpose of schooling, the
role of teacher, what students should learn and how students should be
taught.
Malaysia National Education Philosophy (NPE)
The Malaysia National Education Philosophy (NPE) as stated by Curriculum Development Centre (CDC) 1988 is as follows:
"Education in Malaysia is an ongoing effort towards further developing the potential of individuals in a holistic and integrated approach to create stable and harmonious intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically. Effort is designed to produce Malaysian citizens who are knowledgeable, honorable, responsible, competent and capable of achieving well-being and contribute to the betterment of family, community and country. "
The Malaysia National Education Philosophy (NPE) acts as a guide for all educational activities in Malaysia from the primary level right up to the tertiary level. Its main objectives are to produce knowledgeable individuals with high integriti who will hold responsibility as a citizen to contribute to the country. This is because only through education, individuals can be developed to be key players in achieving the country's aspirations and goals.
The basis of NPE's philosophy is based on the philosophy of human belief in God and religion. The ultimate purpose of education based on this philosophy is therefore to develop the every aspects of individual in a balanced and harmonious way without affecting the well-being of a person. With knowledge and education, individuals should have good ethics and moral values which become the fundamental characteristics of producing a good family, community and society.
The main concept of NPE is the value and role of knowledge in developing individuals and their role in the community and more importantly to shape individuals to serve the community as knowledge is a powerful too to transform individuals and their networks. Knowledge is a lifelong process and one should constantly update existing knowledge and seek new knowledge. Experience is a good way to challenge and improve one's existing knowledge besides strengthening it.
According to the NPE, the purpose of education does not only develop individual's well-being but also develops well-being of each individual's contact layer starting from his family, community and to nation. the purpose of higher education here does not mean to get a paper qualification only but to develop a person as a whole and balanced who are knowledgeable, responsible, honorable and deity.
The Philosophy of Science Education
In the early years, philosophers of science suggested that science was completely objective, rational and empirical. Evidence was collected through scientific method but some argued that scientists selected data and observations to prove a theory and thus data is not completely objective but subjected to human choice.
The science education is very important because it has been telling us a lot of useful and interesting new things about ourselves and also the world that we live in. Science tells us everything that we need to know in our lives. Science plays an important role in stimulating and exciting students' curiosity and interest in things happening around the world. It contributes to the whole curriculum and offers a range of activities which can link practical experience to ideas, develop key skills, encourage critical and creative thought by developing and evaluating explanations. Students are also engaged in questioning and discussion about science issues, the society and the world. With this, students will be more confident in expressing views and evaluating decisions about such matters.
My Teaching Philosophy
Teachers
who inspire know that teaching is like cultivating a garden, and those
who would have nothing to do with thorns must never attempt to gather
flowers. Teaching should be full of ideas instead of stuffed with facts.
The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book. Don't try to
fix the students, fix ourselves first. The good teacher makes the poor
student good and the good student superior. When our students fail, we
as teachers, too, have, failed
